Vanilla Bean Brown Butter Cinnamon Challah Twist: A Guest Post for ‘Baking with Heritage’ at Food Wanderings

A few months ago, Shulie, from the beautiful blog, Food Wanderings, asked me to write a post for her Baking with Heritage series.  I couldn’t have been more flattered, not to mention excited, since this would allow me to journey back to my childhood in my grandmother’s kitchen where she taught me to make challah from an old family recipe. This recipe was taught to her by her mother, who in turn learned it from her mother in Russia, who learned it from her mother in Russia. and so on and so forth. A precious family heirloom that is dear to my heart, and to me, the most perfect challah.

I rarely sway from this recipe, but in this case, my creative side overruled my traditional side, so this round, Vanilla Bean Brown Butter Cinnamon Challah Twist was born – a 2-pound, sweet goo-filled, bouncy, twisted baby challah!

Come on baby, let’s do the challah twist!

Vanilla Bean Brown Butter Cinnamon Swirl Challah Twist

Before I link you to my challah twist post, along with the recipe, a few things I need to touch on that are totally unrelated to this challah twist, but I wanted to update you and failed to do so in my last post.

First off, I finally moved to my own domain about a month ago.  See the URL on top?  I’m no longer wordpress.com, I’m just .com; parsleysagesweet.com.  I haven’t decided where I’m going with this yet, but I’m happy with my new digs.  I bought a a url auto-direct so you don’t (I hope) have to change anything or subscribe again.  But, if there’s any problems, please let me know.  I’ve installed a neat little contact form, which you can access from the page options below the header, where it says; CONTACT ME.

Should I just change it to CONTACT? Is ‘ME’ really necessary?  The stuff I ponder…

Also, none of my ‘likes’ or share button numbers were able to be transferred, so, sadly, it’s a  clean slate..like I’m brand new.  For those of you who ‘liked’ my posts here and/or shared my posts via Pinterest, Twitter, etc, a belated thank you!

Secondly, I finished the Bad Boy First Love story, but it had to be split into two parts because it’s just way too long. Part 20 will be up this coming Monday, April 8th, 2013.  I accidentally published it yesterday so you probably received an email or saw it in your reader.  The link won’t work because, after posting it I was informed that my Secret Recipe Club reveal post, in which the next installment of Bad Boy First Love is a part of, is supposed to go up next Monday, so I had to take it down. BUT, for those of you who read it, I’m adding a lot more to it since I have almost a week to do so.

Having said all that, I’m sorry it’s been so long in between parts, but I experienced the worst case of writers block I’ve ever had, plus some health issues.

Do I really need to say anything about this gorgeous challah/cake ??
It looks amazing and I soooooooooooo want a slice or two now.
We all love it here. This kind of cake (here we call it yeast-cake, as we cannot bless on it as a challah), is super popular here.

Beautiful bread Lisa, and I did notice the .com as soon as I clicked on your page congrats! Sorry it’s been so long since I visited last, I rarely open my reader anymore and so I don’t see your updates. Your such a talented baker and cook don’t let that writer’s block get you down too long. I hope you are feeling okay. Nice to see your beautiful recipes 🙂 xoxox!

  29. Carolyn says:

I loved reading this. My maternal grandfather and his family came from Russia to Australia. He died when my mother was 16 so I never knew him. His second marriage was to an english lady. Somehow the jewish genes surface when I read and see recipes like this one. Thank you for sharing I will give it a try maybe with a camping tweak.

    • Lisa says:

I’m glad you loved reading this, Carolyn! Recipes that conjure up memories of loved ones and our ancestry are so special. I choked up a few times while writing it. I’m sorry you7 did not have more time with your maternal grandpa, but I’m glad this post and challah brought back memories of him. Let me know if you try the challah, or the camping ‘tweak’ of it, rather. xo

  30. Lauren says:

I wanted to thank you for this lovely recipe. I found this recipe from Pinterest and made it yesterday as a special treat for my husband who has been working too hard lately. It was just perfect and we are enjoying it so much. The memories of your grandmother just made it all the more special. Thank you!

    • Lisa says:

I’m so thrilled that you and your husband are enjoying it, Lauren! I think my grandmother would have enjoyed it too – barring ‘tradition’ lol We all love it here too and I’m already getting requests for the holidays. Thank you for sharing that with me..totally made my day 🙂

  31. FoodsNearMe says:

Usually guest post a best thing in which we can write on many blogs about food and more things. Nice guest post i like the flavor of the cinnamon swirl. Fantastic post and thanks for sharing.

  32. Eliza A says:

This challah looks incredible and I was planning on making it tomorrow. I had the website bookmarked but today I checked it to make sure I had everything only to find that the domain name “foodwanderings” expired! Do you have a hard copy of this recipe? I would really love and appreciate the trouble.

    • Lisa says:

Hi, Eliza! I’m shocked that her site is suddenly gone, but no worries, I have a copy of the recipe. I can send it to you by email, if you’d like? If her site isn’t back up within a few days, I’ll have the recipe up here 🙂
